Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. Let the engine and system cool — fluid and lines can be hot and pressurized. Work on level ground with the vehicle on jack stands, and wear eye protection and gloves.
Use only the fluid type specified by the vehicle manufacturer (check the owner's manual or the reservoir cap). Not all systems use the same fluid — many Honda/Acura platforms require a dedicated PSF, and many European vehicles require a CHF-type synthetic fluid. Using the wrong fluid attacks the seals and can cause leaks or failure within months.
Disconnect the pressure and return lines from the pump. Flush the reservoir, return, and pressure lines with new fluid until it runs clear — use only the fluid recommended for your vehicle.
Reconnect the pressure line to the pump and steering component. Connect the return line only to the steering component for now.
Place the return line into a drain pan. Cap the reservoir's return port to prevent leakage.
Fill the pump reservoir with NEW fluid recommended for your vehicle.
Disable the engine so it won't start when cranked (see your vehicle's service manual for the correct procedure).
Crank the engine in short bursts, topping off fluid, until the return line runs free of air bubbles. Never let the pump run dry. Do not crank for more than a few seconds at a time — the starter can overheat.
Install an in-line filter in the return line to extend system life. Connect the return line to the pump, making sure every connection is properly torqued — overtightening can strip threads, and skipping the filter or leaving fittings out of spec voids the warranty.
Confirm the fluid level is correct.
Use the correct puller/installer tool that acts on the pulley hub — never hammer a pulley on, and never press or pull directly on the pump shaft, as this destroys internal pump components. Install to the correct depth. After install, check alignment with a straightedge across all pulleys — misalignment causes belt noise and premature wear.
For adjustable (V-belt) setups, set tension per the vehicle's spec or with a belt tension gauge, and re-check after the first ~100 miles. Serpentine systems use an automatic tensioner. Over-tensioning overloads pump/alternator bearings; under-tensioning causes slip, squeal, and lost assist.
Hand-prime the pump before starting the engine (especially with a remote reservoir). Fill the reservoir to the operating level. Hand-turn the pulley in the correct direction for your application until fluid pumps from the pressure port. Refill the reservoir as needed and complete the bleed per the vehicle manufacturer's instructions.
With the front wheels off the ground and the engine off, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times until no more bubbles appear and the fluid level is stable. Then start the engine and turn side to side 2–4 more times. Many modern platforms require vacuum bleeding for a full purge.
Never hold the steering wheel against full lock for more than a few seconds — pressure can spike and overheat the fluid, damaging the pump.
Avoid high RPM during the first few hundred miles. A small amount of residual noise or foaming is normal and should clear within the first day of driving. If it persists, check for a loose clamp or hose allowing air back into the system.
Torque values below are general reference ranges only. Mounting bolts and pressure/banjo fittings are different types of fasteners — banjo/sealing fittings are torqued far lower than a structural bolt of the same size. Always follow your specific vehicle's OEM service manual.
M8 ≈ 18–22 ft-lb · M10 ≈ 38–41 ft-lb. Reduce ~10–15% if threading into aluminum housings.
Typically 15–37 ft-lb depending on thread size — smaller banjo bolts are torqued much lower than they look.
Leaks at fittings or hoses
Whining, groaning, or squealing from the pump
Assist that only increases with engine RPM
Loss of assist when turning the wheel
Installation on an application other than the listed fitment
Unauthorized modification, disassembly, or repair of the unit
Installation without following the vehicle's OEM service manual
